MAJOR FIRMS SHOULD CUT WASTE SAY CONSERVATIVES

MAJOR FIRMS SHOULD CUT WASTE SAY CONSERVATIVES

Major firms should be asked to sign up to voluntary "responsibility deals" to cut waste, the Conservatives say. The party says existing EU rules are not wide-ranging enough and are "propping up our throwaway culture". The former Tory MP and Asda boss Archie Norman has been asked to look for ways of working with firms on a "fundamental rethink" of tackling waste. The government has given supermarkets a year to slash the use of plastic bags, threatening legislation if they do not. >>>

DEMOLISHING OLD HOUSES AND BUILDING

DEMOLISHING OLD HOUSES AND BUILDING

New adds to climate change Demolishing tens of thousands of Victorian and Edwardian homes and building new ones is adding unnecessarily to climate change, researchers said today. If the 288,000 long-term empty homes in England were used and upgraded to higher efficiency standards, instead of many of them being demolished under Government "Pathfinder" regeneration schemes, it would save the equivalent of three million cars being taken off the roads for a year. >>>

WASUL - EX FOR NATURAL GAS INDUSTRY

WASUL - EX FOR NATURAL GAS INDUSTRY

Our basic system ( WaSul TM -Basic-Ex ) can be used for quality control at gas transfer or sales points , where it can measure e.g. water vapor, hydrogen-sulfide, carbon-dioxide, ammonia, methane, ethane and particulate matter concentration on-line and fully automatically. For process control applications our WaSul TM -Mppm-Ex systems, with their exceptionally wide measurement range can be used for multi-point process monitoring: • at a dehydration unit it can measure the water vapor content of both the unprocessed and the dried natural gas; • at a glycol re-concentration (or regeneration) unit it can measure the water or BTEX content of both the wet and the dry glycol. • at a sweetening unit it can measure the hydrogen-sulfide (H 2 S) concentration both of the sour and the sweetened natural gas. In the above listed applications various WaSul TM systems already proved they excellent reliability and high stability throughout several years of trouble free operation. WaSul TM systems received the approval from the Hungarian Approval Service for Ex-proof Electrical Equipment to be operated at potentially explosive areas. The system can be delivered with various communication options such as 4-20 mA, RS-485, Modbus etc. Moreover, the installation and operational costs for these systems are practically negligible. >>>

GUASCOR SFGLD ENGINES

GUASCOR SFGLD ENGINES

The new GUASCOR SFGLD series stand out for their toughness and high performance under the hardest working conditions. GUASCOR has applied new very resistant materials in the construction of the SFGLD engines. On GUASCOR SFGLD engines, load carburation, speed and load are electronically self controlled, so they can operate at constant and limited emissions in spite of variation. The engine adapts to different qualities of gas wich even allows to switch from natural gas to biogas with no stops. A computerised module provides readouts of the spark plugs condition or allows ignition advance to be adjusted through external signals. GUASCOR engines may be fitted with GUASCOR engines can be equipped with a detonation detection and control system. This enables the engine to work under the severest working conditions while avoiding the effects of persistent detonation. - Reliable - Efficient - Economic maintenance - Environmental-friendly >>>

HARE TODAY FOR GOLDEN EAGLE INCENTIVE

HARE TODAY FOR GOLDEN EAGLE INCENTIVE

They were once a common sight on the west Highland estate of Beinn an Tuirc, but as the landscape has changed over the past 40 years, there is now a greater chance of spotting a mountain hare at a tea party than on the moorland. Now, a project by an energy company aims to establish a thriving community of the creatures by next Easter. ScottishPower Renewables is offering £30 to rangers for every hare they hand over. The animals will be reintroduced to draw a pair of golden eagles, which feed on the hares, away from the wind turbines. >>>

WASUL - MUWAPAS FOR QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE AEROSOL MONITORING

WASUL - MUWAPAS FOR QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE AEROSOL MONITORING

Atmospheric aerosol plays an important role in atmospheric processes, contribute strongly to visibility reduction and have serious adverse health effects. There are various sources of atmospheric aerosols including combustion of fossil fuels, biomass burning or mineral dust from desert region. The degree of contribution to the above mentioned effects depends on the type of aerosols, therefore there is a strong need for instruments which can measure not only the total concentration of atmospheric aerosols, but can also classify it. Photoacoustics was always recognized as a highly promising method for qualitative analysis of aerosols, as it can measure directly the amount of light absorption by aerosols, while being largely insensitive to uncharacteristic light scattering. However photoacoustic differentiation between aerosols was strongly hindered by the fact that optical absorption spectra of aerosols are highly uncharacteristic, when measured in a narrow wavelength range. We have developed and patented a method of measuring photoacoustically the absorption spectra in a wide wavelength range, i.e. from the near-infrared to the UV. With our MuWaPas system it is possible to differentiate between aerosol types. Besides aerosols, we also offer gas monitoring systems for ammonia, methane, ozone or BTEX monitoring. >>>

WASUL - PERM FOR GAS PERMEABILITY MEASUREMENTS

WASUL - PERM FOR GAS PERMEABILITY MEASUREMENTS

The diode laser based permeability measuring systems of Hilase offer unique possibilities for gas permeability measurements on plastic, rubber, paper, textile or other samples. Due to its continuous operation mode, excellent selectivity, high sensitivity and wide dynamic range WaSul™-Perm is insensitive to the usual measurement interferences. The measurable permeating components include water vapor, hydrogen-sulfide, methane, ethane, carbon-dioxide, BTEX, ammonia, oxygen etc. Furthermore, the excellent selectivity of the system makes WaSulTM-Perm suitable to study the permeation of gas mixtures, too. WaSul™-Perm is available in two basic versions. The first one, which is based on photoacoustic gas detection, is optimized for measurements at normal pressure and temperatures up to 120 °C. The second one, which is based on photothermal beam deflection method, can be used also at extreme pressures (up to 1000 bar) and also at high temperatures. An outstanding feature of our system is that due to its high dynamic range, the measurement time needed for the accurate and precise determination of the permeation parameters (i.e. permeability, diffusivity and solubility) is much shorter compared to other measurement methods. With WaSulTM-Perm reliable determination of the permeation parameters is possible even when some of the diffusing molecules are precipitated by a chemical reaction within the polymer sample. Further advantages of WaSulTM-Perm system include its ability to measure spontaneous gas emission in minute amounts from the measured sample. Our WaSulTM-Perm systems are commercially available. >>>

UK GOES FOR NUCLEAR

UK GOES FOR NUCLEAR

A government minister will call today for a huge expansion of Britain's nuclear power in what he predicts could be a £20bn economic bonanza that will create 100,000 new jobs and benefit the economy as much as North Sea oil. In an ambitious speech that will alarm the anti-nuclear lobby, John Hutton, the business secretary, will argue that the UK's nuclear programme should go beyond replacing the existing stock of 23 reactors, which provide 20% of the country's energy. Instead nuclear should contribute "a significantly higher proportion" of the nation's energy needs in the years ahead, and Britain should aim to become a world leader in the development of nuclear power technology. >>>

WORLD'S GLACIERS MELTING AT RECORD RATE

WORLD'S GLACIERS MELTING AT RECORD RATE

With global glaciers -- a vital water source for millions, or even billions, of people worldwide -- melting at a record rate, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) urged countries to agree on a new emissions reduction pact. According to the UNEP-backed World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS), data from nearly 30 reference glaciers in nine mountain ranges indicate that between the years 2004-2005 and 2005-2006, the average rate of melting and thinning more than doubled. >>>
