AIRCRAFT - AIRBUS A380

Messier-Dowty was selected in 2001 to design, manufacture, test and support the nose landing gear for the ultra-large Airbus A380 Aircraft. The A380 will be the world’s largest passenger aircraft ever built. The nose gear development benefits from Messier-Dowty’s extensive experience on all existing Airbus aircraft and particularly the A340-600. It will ensure a future growth capability of the aircraft of up to 620 tons. The forward-retracting NLG design introduces new technologies, namely the introduction of 350-bar hydraulic pressure never before used on large commercial aircraft, as well as the use of an HVOF (High Velocity Oxygen Fuel) surface treatment process instead of using Chromium VI plating. >>>

AIRCRAFT - BOMBARDIER CHALLENGER 600/601/604

AIRCRAFT - BOMBARDIER CHALLENGER 600/601/604

Challenger 600 formed the basis for this successful business jet family. Canadair purchased the design and marketing rights from Bill Lear in 1976 for this new business jet that promised a large sized cabin, transatlantic capabilities, good operating economics and was one of the first to designs to feature a supercritical wing. Production of the Challenger 600 ceased in 1983. The 601 first flew in April 1982. This aircraft evolved with a major weight and drag reduction program as well as an engine change that offered improved speed and an increase to a maximum range of 3,000nm. Further enhancements for performance occurred in 1987 and an extended range version was offered in 1989. The culmination of lessons learned on 600/601 heralded the arrival of the Challenger 604, which certified September 1995 and entered into service January 1996. This aircraft, one of the top selling large business jets since 1999, offers advanced avionics and mature systems developed through 15 years of refinements and Bombardier’s regional jet expertise. Landing Gear for the Challenger 600 series was originally designed at M-D Gloucester and later transferred to Toronto. The Challenger has retractable twin-wheel tricycle type landing gear. Challenger 601 saw the introduction of steer-by-wire technology and a locking segment side brace is on Challenger 604. >>>

AIRCRAFT - BOMBARDIER CRJ 100/200

AIRCRAFT - BOMBARDIER CRJ 100/200

The CRJ program was launched in March 1989 and with it Bombardier became the pioneer of the 50 seat jet class aircraft. Certified in July of 1992, the CRJ100 provided the high-speed advantage of larger jets while operating economics, particularly long stage lengths, were closer to those of the turboprops. 1995 saw the introduction of more efficient engines and the 200 series was launched in 1996. Both the CRJ100 and CRJ200 have extended and long range versions with range up to 2,005 nm. The CRJ series has firmly established itself as one of the world’s quietest and most environmentally friendly family of aircraft. Another feature providing a definite asset for congested airports is the CRJ200 requires only a 75’ radius for an 180o turn. In December 2003 the program reached a significant milestone, achieved only eight times since 1959 when the passenger jet age began, the delivery of the 1,000th CRJ aircraft. To date, the CRJ is the most successful regional aircraft program in history and the only regional aircraft program to reach 1,000 deliveries. 37 customers in over 20 countries that span the globe have ordered CRJ aircraft. From Messier-Dowty’s perspective, the high cycle operations of the regional jet prompted a different approach to landing gear design to meet its more intensive operating requirements. High volume production led to the employment of innovative procurement and manufacturing processes - such as assembly rigs, parts kits and implementation of LEAN initiatives. In addition, to meet the needs of this growing operator base, Messier-Dowty has broadened its aftermarket support network. >>>

AIRCRAFT - BOMBARDIER DASH 8-Q / DEHAVILLAND DHC8

AIRCRAFT - BOMBARDIER DASH 8-Q / DEHAVILLAND DHC8

Launched in 1979 and certified in 1984, the Dash 8 has proven to be a popular player in the regional turboprop market. This aircraft is perhaps best known for its short airfield performance, utilizing runways as short as 800m as well as hot and high performance capabilities. The Dash 8 became know as the Dash 8-Q for its Quiet operation in 1996 with the introduction of a revolutionary new system — Noise and Vibration Suppression (NVS). NVS lowers cabin noise and vibration to levels previously unattainable in a turboprop and lower than many commercial jet interiors. The contract was awarded to Messier-Dowty in 1980 and includes landing gear and associated components. This was the first regional aircraft program for Messier-Dowty’s Toronto site. The steer by wire nose gear retracts forward with main units retracting rearward into engine nacelles. >>>

AIRCRAFT - BOMBARDIER GLOBAL EXPRESS

AIRCRAFT - BOMBARDIER GLOBAL EXPRESS

In December 1993, Bombardier launched a new long-range corporate jet, which received certification in 1998. Created by a collaboration of 11 global aerospace leaders, the Global Express was designed to fly long distances (in excess of 6,000nm) at high speeds (M 0.89) - such as non-stop New York/Tokyo or Sydney/Los Angeles with maximum attention paid to reliability and passenger comfort. The speed and range combined with the ability to access challenging airfields in isolated locations set a new standard for corporate aviation. Although designed initially for civil applications, the range capabilities and interior customization options have generated significant interest in the military sector. Messier-Dowty has worked with Bombardier since the inception of the program and is the exclusive supplier of landing gear on the Global Express and Global 5000. Messier-Dowty designs and manufactures a large, robust gear for this aircraft, which has the highest MTOW (98,000lbs) in a business jet category. Through the technical expertise within our multi-disciplined engineering group, M-DI has been instrumental in the design and implementation of the entire landing gear system for this family of aircraft. >>>

The Falcon 7X landing gears will be Messier-Dowty’s first commercial gears that employ HVOF (High Velocity Oxy Fuel) metal processing. As a replacement to traditional chromium plating, HVOF is an advanced metallic ceramic coating that is bonded to the base metal through a specialized application process. More environmentally friendly than chromium plating, HVOF is also expected to provide performance benefits through improved wear on dynamic joints and seal surfaces. >>>
