Picosecond sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectrometer from EKSPLA is an ideal tool in laser spectroscopy for in-situ investigation of surfaces and interfaces. The SFG spectrometer operates from 4300 to 625 cm-1 and provides < 6 cm-1 spectral resolution. The heart of the system is a picosecond Nd:YAG laser generating 25 ps pulses that pump an OPG/DFG delivering from 260 to 20 µJ per pulse across the IR range. Basic operation principles of the SFG spectroscopy In SFG experiment a pulsed tunable infrared IR (wVIR) laser beam is mixed with a visible VIS (wVIS) beam to produce an output at the sum frequency (wSFG = wVIR + wVIS). SFG is second-order nonlinear process, which is allowed only in media without inversion symmetry. At surfaces or interfaces inversion symmetry is necessarily broken, that makes SFG highly surface specific. As the IR wavelength is scanned, active vibrational modes of molecules at the interface give a resonant contribution to SFG signal. The resonant enhancement provides spectral information on surface characteristic vibrational transitions. Different combinations of input and output beam polarizations allow the determination of surface symmetry or molecular orientation. SFG detects vibrational modes, which are rather localized to specific groups of atoms within the molecules. Information about relative orientation of different groups within the same molecule maybe obtained, and, hence, the molecular structure can be deducted. Referring to the SFG signal phase measurements, information about the absolute orientation of molecule in respect to the surface can be obtained. ASTRANET NEWS - CASE STUDY: ICI IMAGEDATA

Checking colour quality at speed ICI Imagedata asked AstraNet Systems Ltd to design and install an on-line monitoring system to check production of dye sublimation printing ribbons. Three Astra UV/VIS Spectrometers now provide high speed measurement of the total optical density (TOD) of each coloured dye panel applied to a moving web. ICI Imagedata is one of only a few manufacturers of thermal dye sublimation printing ribbons, which carry a repeating sequence of yellow, magenta and cyan dye panels. AstraNet designed a quality control solution using three fibre optic Astra UV/VIS Spectrometers. Fibres deliver light from a tungsten lamp to one side of the moving web, and collection fibres carry transmitted light from the other side to the three computer-controlled spectrometers. A stepper motor provides transverse movement of the monitoring system so that the whole ribbon is checked over a 10-minute cycle. Product parameters, such as the sequence of colours, panel length and absorbance specifications, are input to the software program and if averaged absorbance values fall outside specified limits, an alarm is triggered. >>>

Complete Computer Control The integral instrument controller unit coordinates all operations on an Alpha Analyst including: instrument setup, automatic pumping and venting of spectrometers, data acquisition, control and the monitoring of the status of each spectrometer. Computer control of the front end electronics eliminates any knobs to turn or buttons to push so the possibility of tampering or accidental misadjustment is eliminated. Precise adjustment of all front end electronics is accomplished via emulated controls - right on the same screen as your spectrum. Instrument settings are maintained in secure setup files to which the system manager can restrict access - ensuring the system integrity is maintained at all times. A complete copy of all instrument settings is maintained with each and every sample measurement, providing traceability for each measurement directly to the appropriate instrument setup and calibration. Vacuum management is accomplished entirely by the controller unit. There are no mechanical valves to manipulate simplifying the task of loading and unloading samples. The operator can concentrate on getting the samples counted and let the computer automatically manipulate the vacuum system to control venting, protecting acquiring chambers from inadvertent venting. Data acquisition is continuously and automatically monitored during all aspects of instrument operation preventing any corruption of data due to vacuum loss. No longer will samples need to be recounted because the vacuum was lost 8 hours into a 16 hour count. The pressure of each individual chamber is independently and continuously monitored to verify correct operating conditions are established and maintained for data acquisition. Should the pressure in any chamber at any time during counting exceed the user defined limit, acquisition will be automatically suspended until the proper operating pressure is again attained, at which time the controller will continue the count.. Integrating your Laboratory CANBERRA’s Alpha Analyst offers the same consistency of operation and flexibility offered with all Genie applications. The Alpha Analyst instrument makes use of an Ethernet based computer controlled MCA located in the Alpha Analyst Controller Unit. Because it’s Ethernet based, the Alpha Analyst can be located and controlled from where it’s convenient for your operation - including remote instrument control. Redundancy of operation is paramount in high volume applications - instrument down time due to computer failure cannot be tolerated. The Alpha Analyst is totally integrated containing the detector signal processing and control electronics - allowing instrument control to be easily switched to any of a number of existing network operating stations. The availability of multiple access points throughout any network creates a more efficient operating environment. A remote workstation in the sample preparation laboratory can be used to define sample batches on the Alpha Analyst and enter all of the required sample information (sample ID, description, size, decay date, tracer volume, etc.) at the time physical sample batch is created and aliquoted. When the sample batch arrives in the counting room all that’s required is to load the samples and start acquisition. >>>

    SPECTRAL ANALYSIS

    SPECTRAL ANALYSIS

Wavelength meters and laser spectrum analyzers for laser beam analysis. Traditionally, spectra are analyzed with spectrometers and interferometers. Such standard instruments can also be used to measure and analyze the output beam from a laser. Two types of instruments are particularly suitable and convenient for laser analysis: wavelength meters and the laser spectrum analyzers. Wavelength Meters Frequently, a laser beam only has one emission wavelength or a closely grouped set of wavelengths. So to determine the emission spectrum, it's necessary to measure this unique wavelength. The Coherent WaveMate™ and WaveMaster™ are cost-effective wavelength meters that can measure the wavelength of both pulsed and CW lasers. Laser Spectrum Analyzers Although lasers usually only have a single-line emission, this line usually has fine structure when analyzed in detail. Frequently, this line structure is due to the transverse and longitudinal modes of the laser and the laser cavity. Laser spectrum analyzers allow you to analyze modal structure and optimize cavity configurations. Coherent provides a series of scanning Fabry-Perot-type interferometers with two mirrors mounted in a confocal configuration. These spectrum analyzers do not measure the absolute wavelength, but display the line structure with very high resolution, typically ~0.000,001 nm to ~0.001 nm (~1 MHz-1 GHz). >>>

    DP-LIBS: DOUBLE-PULSE BREAKDOWN SPECTROSCOPY

    DP-LIBS: DOUBLE-PULSE BREAKDOWN SPECTROSCOPY

Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) is an extremely powerful and flexible analysis technique that utilizes the energy in a short, intense laser pulse to vaporize or “ablate” a small volume of sample material. The ablated target material (whether solid, liquid, or gas) absorbs enough energy to vaporize and then ionize the constituent atoms, creating a small cloud of plasma (free ions and electrons) that expands rapidly. As the cloud expands and cools, a significant fraction of the ions recombine to form excited atoms, which eventually decay via spontaneous emission to the atomic ground state (the state of lowest energy in the atom). The photons given off during spontaneous emission can be collected and spectrally analyzed which provides a “spectral fingerprint” of all the constituent elements of the target and the plasma. Since each element has a unique spectral fingerprint, relative and absolute elemental concentrations within the target material can be determined. Because the target material is interrogated by a laser beam and the plasma is analyzed by “all–optical” techniques, the analysis can be performed remotely and on hazardous materials. >>>

    LIGHT SOURCE - PULSED XENON

    LIGHT SOURCE - PULSED XENON

This light source, developed especially for laser photolysis spectrometers, features a pulsed 150W xenon arc lamp. The lamp runs in conventional cw mode with its operating current increased significantly for a few milliseconds when increased photon flux is required. Optimisation of the electrical discharge characteristics (using resistive and inductive elements added to the discharge circuit), ensures that for part of the discharge period, the increased light level is kept at a constant level. When the output from a pulsed laser, used as the actinic source, is synchronised with the beginning of the plateau region, up to 500µs is available for recording changes in absorbance (ie. changes which mirror the concentration changes of intermediates in the laser initiated reaction). When slower reactions or longer lived species are being measured, the pulsing action is disabled and the light source is used in regular cw mode. >>>
