The U.S. based United Retek Corporation was amongst the pioneers of on-site recycling of contaminated soils as the Environmental Protection Agency tightened brownfield regulations in the mid-1980s. Since then, the company has treated and recycled around two million tonnes of soil, at hundreds of sites. PAH EX-SITU REMEDIATION AT JUNIOR SCHOOL SITE
Following a site investigation in 2006, PAH contamination was seen to be widespread at a proposed junior school site, due to the use of ash, cinder and other products of burning, as a sub-base on to which the tarmac and flag stone surfaces had been laid. The elevated concentrations of PAH heavy metal contaminants encountered have the potential to cause significant harm to the end users from soil ingestion or inhalation of vapours. All contaminated soils were excavated and treated using a blend of metal precipitating and oxidising reagents designed to render the waste materials non-hazardous. >>>
