COATING RESINS - RESINS FOR PROTECTIVE COATINGS AND MARINE

COATING RESINS - RESINS FOR PROTECTIVE COATINGS AND MARINE

The heavy duty protective coatings market covers a very wide range of product types, suitable for application for extremes of performance; from high performance anticorrosive primers and topcoat systems for marine and offshore environments, specialised chemical resistant coatings for tank linings to relatively conventional primers and topcoats for general protective work. The theme common through most formulators’ specifications is high performance and high build. The performance is specific for the coating type. For primers - adhesion and corrosion protection. For topcoats - durability, gloss and colour retention, from simple alkyds to highly durable and resistant 2-component acrylics. High build coatings require the use of thixotropic rheology modifiers to provide sag control and edge cover. There is also the modern requirement for these properties at reduced VOC as specified by the different regulations worldwide. CRAY VALLEY offers a selection of polymer types and rheology modifiers for use in heavyduty protective coatings formulations: >>>

COATING RESINS - RHEOLOGICAL ADDITIVES

COATING RESINS - RHEOLOGICAL ADDITIVES

The CRAYVALLAC® range of rheology modifiers provide formulations with shear thinning rheology and a time dependent recovery. This special time dependent characteristic is often referred to as “thixotropy”. For coatings formulators the CRAYVALLAC® rheology modifiers provide coatings with a high viscosity under the low shear conditions which are typical of storage, resulting in excellent anti-sedimentation characteristics in pigmented systems thus maintaining a good dispersion and preventing hard settling. In addition, the excellent shear thinning behaviour of the CRAYVALLAC® rheological additives ensures that coatings are easily applied under the high shear conditions of application by either brush, roller or spray. Following application, the thixotropic nature of the CRAYVALLAC® rheology modifiers, or time dependent viscosity recovery, provides sufficient time for good flow and levelling, yet enables sufficient viscosity build up to prevent sag. The CRAYVALLAC® rheology modifiers are suitable for use in a multitude of application areas such as in coatings, inks, adhesives and sealants where they introduce a shear thinning rheology and controlled viscosity recovery. >>>

COATING RESINS - SUPER GELKYDS

COATING RESINS - SUPER GELKYDS

SUPER GELKYDS are urethane – urea thixotropic alkyds designed for use in decorative coatings. They are suitable for use in paints, but more especially have found greater use in varnishes and woodstains. They are used to impart a degree of thixotropy to the coating. This controls the rheology of the coating during all stages of its storage, application and film formation. The SUPER GELKYD range of resins forms part of the Cray Valley thixotropic product portfolio; GELKYD (polyamidemodified alkyds) and CRAYVALLAC (rheological modifiers) being the other technologies. >>>

COATING RESINS - WAXES

COATING RESINS - WAXES

Surface modifier waxes are usually milled into fine powders to aid their incorporation into coatings. The fineness of these powders is dependent upon their final applications. In general, the average particle size should be similar to the thickness of the final coating. This represents a range of average particle sizes from a couple of microns up to several hundred microns in certain applications. The process of preparing fine powders is referred to as micronisation and this is generally achieved by one of two methods: • Spraying • Air Jet Milling Cray Valley utilizes both the spray and jet mill technologies. This “state of the art” equipment is constantly monitored to ensure that our product particle size specifications are strictly adhered to. This particle size distribution is closely monitored using modern air and liquid dispersion laser diffractometers supported by conventional gravimetric sieve analysis. >>>

ABRADABLE

ABRADABLE

Abradable Derived from aero engine gas turbine compressors, these abradable and rub tolerant coatings are now applied to automotive engine turbochargers, pumps and compressors to provide clearance control. A turbocharger rotor spins at high speed within its housing. As its rotational speed increases, and to some extent the operating temperature, the outside diameter of the rotor also increases. If the clearances between the rotor blade tips and its housing were designed for optimal aerodynamic performance, this growth would cause the rotor blade trips to touch the bore of the housing. These clearances are therefore larger than desirable due to mechanical considerations. Abradable clearance control coating applied to rotor path of turbocharger The thermal spray coating solution for this problem is to apply a soft abradable coating to the housing bore that can be rubbed away by the rotor blades without causing material loss from the rotor. These coatings reduce the risk of blade damage and at the same time improve the efficiency and performance of the turbocharger by managing the rotor path tip clearance Abradable Coating Features/Benefits Raise Levels of Reliability Lower Cost of Overhaul Increase fuel Efficiency Increase Performance Low Material Transfer Coating Wear without Surface Deformation Low Adhesive Transfer Low Turbine/Rotor Wear Typical Applications Turbochargers Land Based Turbines Aerospace Power Units< Compressors Pumps Processes Plasma Combustion Typical Materials Aluminium-Polymer Nickel Graphite CoNiCrAlY-BN-Polymer >>>
