HOW DOES A HEYPAC DOUBLE ACTING PUMP WORK? (the technical stuff) The Heypac pump works on a reciprocating differential area piston principle. This means that the pump uses a large area air drive piston connected to a smaller area hydraulic piston to convert compressed air power to hydraulic power. Great! What does that mean? The easiest way to explain it is with an example. The ratio between the air drive piston area and the hydraulic piston area is indicated by the pump model number. EXAMPLE: GX40 means that this is a 40 : 1 pump so using this ratio, we can explain the principle of operation. Area of the air drive piston = 15.6 sq. in. / 100.65 sq. cms (the air drive piston remains the same size in all GX series pumps) Area of the hydraulic piston = 0.39 sq. in. / 2.52 sq. cms (15.6 divided by 40 (ratio) ) So, if you apply 60 PSI (4 BAR) of air pressure to the air drive piston (60 times 15.6) you get 936 lbs. of force. Then you take the ratio, 40 times 60 PSI (4 BAR) to the air drive, and that gives you 2400 PSI (165 BAR). Now take the 2400 PSI (165 BAR) multiplied by the size of the hydraulic piston (0.39 sq. in.) and you get 936 lbs. of force. Therefore, the GX40 pump with an air drive pressure of 60 PSI (4 BAR) will stall at 2400 PSI (165 BAR) because the forces equal out between the air drive piston and the hydraulic piston. Because of this method of operation the Heypac pump has the ability to stall at any predetermined pressure, and hold this pressure without consuming any power. The Heypac is run by compressed air, or other inert gas, so there is no danger of heat build up or fire from electrical sources, which means the Heypac can be used anywhere you can run an air line. TECHNICAL DATA Maximum air consumption - approx. 80 scfm at 500 cycles per min. Maximum air pressure - 100 PSI (7 BAR) Minimum air pressure - 20 PSI (1.4 BAR) Maximum cycle speed - 500 cycles per min (intermittent duty).
