SHIP-BORNE ANTI-SUBMARINE WEAPON SYSTEM - MILAS

SHIP-BORNE ANTI-SUBMARINE WEAPON SYSTEM - MILAS

MILAS Ship-borne anti-submarine weapon system The threat The activities of submarine shipyards and the intensity of submarine sales on the international market, linked with the ambitions of several navies to increase their capability in submarine warfare, forecasts an increasing threat in several specific areas in the world over the next ten years. The MILAS weapon system answers the requirement of those navies who want to keep their naval surface forces out of the reach of enemy capabilities. Operational requirement Aside from their force projection role, modern naval forces also need to control their maritime areas and protect their surface ships. These operations generally include three different aspects: air defence against aircraft and missiles, surface defence against enemy warships, and defence against submarines. Anti-submarine warfare missions are probably the most difficult ones as their success depends largely on detection dictated the clearness and homogeneity of the sea. However, recent progress in the capabilities of modern sonars and in signal processing allow surface ships to identify and classify submarine threats at ranges in excess of heavyweight torpedo range. These performances can be obtained by very low frequency active and passive sonars which combine long range detection and high accuracy. The MBDA solution MILAS is an all weather anti-submarine warfare weapon system derived from the OTOMAT MK2 missile system. The system is designed to carry and release an MU-90, or similar lightweight torpedo, close to the designated submarine position, as indicated by the ship sonar or by a co-operating ASW helicopter or MPA. When launched from surface ships, MILAS transports 300 kg, 324 mm diameter light torpedoes. It is capable of launching its torpedo at distances of up to 35 km in all directions and with very good precision, thus optimising the probability of destroying the enemy submarine. The performances of the MILAS missile make it unique in the world. Ships equipped with MILAS will be capable of neutralising a hostile submarine from a stand-off distance within a very short time. The system has demonstrated its operational superiority compared with helicopters armed with torpedoes, which either have a much longer reaction time, or are unable to operate in rough seas. MAIN FEATURES and ADVANTAGES Lighter workload MILAS requires low maintenance and reduced crew on board. Complementary with ASW helicopters With torpedo delivery accomplished by MILAS, the on board helicopter is fully available and operational to complete other naval missions such as surface warfare, logistics missions and search and rescue. Optimisation of the latest generation of sonar Deep sonars and low frequency sonars have performances well above the range of tube launched torpedoes. MILAS is able to deliver a torpedo at stand-off ranges in accordance with sonar performances. Range MILAS long range provides the launching ship and the escorted naval formation permanent and effective defence against the submarine, be it conventional or nuclear. Fast reaction time Fired within a very short firing sequence, MILAS is able to deliver a torpedo over a detected submarine (less than 3 minutes to deliver a torpedo). Permanence The firing of MILAS requests only a push button action. Only one operator is required to operate the system This can be done under routine alert, day and night and in adverse weather conditions. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION MILAS firing is controlled from the CIC by means of a dedicated console linked to the ship’s combat system. The firing sequence is highly automated and so only one operator is required. >>>

The MBDA solution The air-to-surface version of the EXOCET family, the AM39 Block 2 is primarily a sea-skimmer of the Fire and Forget type. AM39 Block 2 can be launched from strike aircraft, maritime patrol aircraft or medium-heavy helicopters throughout their speed and altitude envelopes. With a range up to 70 km depending on the altitude and speed of the aircraft, the AM39 Block 2 enables aircraft to stay out of range of the anti-aircraft weapons of attacking surface vessels. When not mounted on an aircraft, the missile is stored in a pressurized logistic container. MAIN FEATURES and ADVANTAGES Trans-horizon firing capacity Very high lethality Stealth delayed emission of the homing head, ultra-skimming flight at very low altitude Target selection discrimination capacity of the homing head Penetration of defences firing in divergent or convergent bursts designed to arrive from all directions at the same time in order to saturate defences; terminal manoeuvres to escape short range missiles and fast firing guns; sophisticated electronic counter countermeasures. Flexible tactical use low workload for the operators due to automatic computing of the skimming flight altitude. This depends on the condition of the sea when approaching the target, management of the firing procedure, optimisation of trajectories - initial flight level possible for obstacle clearance, etc. Status of programme Ordered by the French Navy for its Super-Etendard and Atlantic aircraft ATL 2 and by 11 foreign countries, the AM39 has already been installed on many different types of aircraft, including helicopters. LOW COST RANGE EXPANSION WING KIT - DIAMOND BACK

LOW COST RANGE EXPANSION WING KIT - DIAMOND BACK

DIAMOND BACK Low cost range expansion wing kit Operational requirement Demand for systems capable of extending the range and manoeuvrability of certain guided bombs has increased over the years. Yet military budgets need this requirement to be met at the lowest possible cost.. The MBDA solution For this mission, MBDA has developed an original technical solution: a low cost, high performance footprint expansion wing kit, designed to be compatible with low cost GPS-guided weapons including: Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) and Small Diameter Bomb (SDB). The DIAMOND BACK® wing kit solution offers a number of advantages: the in-flight deployment of the DIAMOND BACK® wings coupled with high aerodynamic efficiency enables longer range and better manoeuvrability for the weapon Low frontal area and compact form when the wings are stowed simple, robust and reliable extension mechanism The tandem wing provides a superior distribution of the wing load The DIAMOND BACK ® kit concept also improves the pilot's survivability, as the increased release distance allows the launch aircraft to remain in a stand-off position. From launch to impact After the bomb has been released and the diamond wing has been extended, the bomb benefits from additional lift. When a bomb like the GPS-guided JDAM (Joint Direct Attack Munition), equipped with a DIAMOND BACK ® kit, is released at an altitude of 25,000 ft (7 600 m), its range increases from 18.5km to 65 km. Status of programme In July 2001, MBDA and Boeing signed a teaming agreement for world-wide sales of the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) family of weapons and its derivatives, such as the extended range variant (JDAM-ER). The teaming agreement also includes the US Small Diameter Bomb (SDB) programme, for wich Boeing has been selected for the next 2-year system development and demonstration (SDD) phase. Both JDAM-ER and the Boeing SDB solution use the MBDA Diamond Back wing kit to achieve range extension. Under the sponsorship of the USAF, MBDA and Boeing have successfully demonstrated extended range for JDAM and SSBREX, with 7 DIAMOND BACK® wing kit flight tests completed between April and December 2000. Weapon releases were from a USAF F-16 at Eglin AFB, Florida and White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. Two weapon types were used (2000lb JDAM ER and 250 lb SSBREX) proving that the wing kit is scalable across a range of payloads. Flight test objectives were met by demonstration of safe separation, wing deployment, controlled cruise flight, down range and cross track performance and terminal end game that resulted in hitting the target area as planned. DIAMOND BACK® increases the weapon footprint by up to 5 times (dependent on release altitude) whilst retaining the terminal accuracy of the JDAM or SDB munition. DIAMOND BACK® has been selected for SDB and enters service with the USAF in 2006 >>>

TRANSPORTABLE UNHARDENED COLLECTIVE PROTECTION (UCPS)

TRANSPORTABLE UNHARDENED COLLECTIVE PROTECTION (UCPS)

Transportable Unhardened Collective Protection (UCPS) The Unhardened Collective Protection System (UCPS) provides military and civilian personnel with a very high level of protection from potential CBRN hazards. The system was designed for the UK Ministry of Defence by MDH Defence and provides rest and relief from the effects of wearing full Individual Protective Equipment (IPE or MOPS). The system can provide CBRN collective protection for field hospitals, command and control centres, medical dressing stations and static logistic support facilities. The Air Filtration Unit (AFU) produces a supply of filtered air, free from nuclear, biological and chemical contaminents. The AFU inflates the shelter and provides a clean source of air for the occupants and also maintains the internal shelter pressure above that of atmospheric pressure. This over pressure prevents any potential ingress of contaminants into the toxic free and safe area. Air is drawn through the pre filter and into the composite filter by the fan and discharged into the rear cone assembly. A hose is attached to the cone assembly and feeds the filtered air into the tent or shelter. The rear cone incorporates the ON/OFF switch, air flow gauge and shelter over pressure gauge.
