AEROSTAT CABLE

AEROSTAT CABLE

Tethered Aerostats are unmanned non rigid lighter than air cehicles sometimes referred to as 'blimps'. These Aerostats remain anchored to the ground by a thether cable. This tether cable provides electrical power to the platforms systems, radar, infrared , CCTV, etc via fibre optics (fiber optics). The tether cable can also act as the main tensile rope, this involves the use of aramid fibres which act as the strength member enabling the cable to withstand snatch loads of several tonnes. The tethered aerostat (TA) consists of the envelope with the ballow, the payload suspended by rope and rigging. The payload would include navigational equipment, control and emergency power and lightning discharge protector. Working altitudes can vary from 1000-5000 meters with payout speeds of up to 180 meters per minute. The cable construction uses Fibre Optics (Fiber Optics) and conductor cores and coaxials, these elements are wrapped in aramid bibres like kevlar (tm) or Twaron that acts as the strength member normally rated 4-5 times the safety margin with limited elongation of less than 3%. The entire package is extruded with a waterproof protective material such as polyurethane. The cable diameters are between 12-19mm diameter. The strength element aramid fibre is terminated in a lightweight eye thimble to a padeye and the conductor elements pig tailed out the dise of the tether to special waterproof connectors. All these components can be made in delrin peek or aluminium for reduced weight implications. Objective design for Aerostat cables and important characteristics are material stiffness and strength to weight ratio (B/D ratio). The diameter of the tether has to be as small as possible to reduce or limit the aerodynamic drag. >>>

DYNAMIC FLOW LINE CONTROL CABLE

A dynamic flow line control cable or umbilical is designed to hang in a centenary form between a fixed structure or wellhead platform (WHP) and a floating structure (FPSO). This type of umbilical is normally low in weight with either contra helical armour or Aramid fibre to endure axial loading. This dynamic flowing cable would normally incorporate power conductors, instrumental and fibre optics (fiber optic) for high data transmission. Throughout the entire length of the control cable the armour or aramid fibres functions as a load bearing member. The strength members are utilised to secure the umbilical to each installation via a hang off device using flanges, fixing nuts and bolts, bend stiffeners or bend restrictors are installed to protect the cable at vulnerable interfaces. The power cores are rated 0.6/1 Kv IEC – 60332-3-22 CAT A, insulation is normally cross linked polyethelene or RPE. All jacket material is low smoke halogen free thermoset oil resistant compound. The design life of the cable will be at least 10 years and stable when hanging in water. Fibre Optics (Fiber Optics) are constructed with tight buffered, individual fibre reinforced with aramid yarn. The outer jacket is low smoke halogen-free. Termination of the dynamic cable is via splitter junction boxes with suitable connectors or hard wired for locating in a Zone 1, Gas Group 114, Temp Class T3. Dynamic flowing cables are manufactured to ISO 13628-5 (API 17E) , LRS, DNV, ABS. >>>
