The purpose of corona or plasma surface treatment of polymer-based materials is to increase surface wettability through electrical discharge. The low surface energy of polymer-based substrates often leads to poor adhesion of inks, glues and coatings. To obtain optimum adhesion, it is necessary to increase the surface energy of the substrate to just above that of the material to be applied. Surface Treatment with either Corona or Plasma results in good wetting of the material over the surface of the substrate and so improves adhesion. For optimum adhesion when printing, gluing or coating on various substrates, it is necessary to obtain a high surface energy. Determining the surface energy can be achieved by measuring contact-angle or by use of Tantec Surface Energy Test Inks - DyneTEC. This form of measurement is based on the ASTM method for measuring the surface energy of polyethylene film. When the test ink is applied to the surface, it will either form a continuous film on the surface or pull back into small droplets. If the liquid remains as a film for 3 seconds, the substrate will have a minimum surface energy of that ink value. Should the ink reticulate, the surface energy of the substrate is lower than that of the ink. The exact surface energy can be determined by applying a range of increasing or decreasing values of test ink. The inks are available in 2mN/m increments from 30-58mN/m – including 72 mN/m and can be supplied in 20ml glass bottles with integral brush applicator or in 5ml disposable pens. >>>

LeakTEC is an in-line material inspection device used to detect pinholes, leaks or cracks on a multitude of plastic products, primarily manufactured in the Food, Pharmaceutical and the Medical Device Industry. Typical accomplished field applications are surface testing of moulding and welding joints in medical devices, like medical tubes, containers, pipettes, cannulaes, and extruded film for medical bags, etc. This fully automatic test is capable of detecting pinholes even smaller than 4 microns by introducing an electrical potential between a detecting electrode and an electrical ground, (i.e. metal jig or mandrel holding the part) while the plastic part itself acts as the insulator. In the event of detecting a crack or pinhole in the plastic material, an electrical contact is established between electrode and ground. This pass/fail contact is processed via the integral generator module interfaced with the main machine control. The machine control can either enable a downstream ‘part-reject’ function or track trends in the manufacturing process, which can be fed back for early process adjustments or maintenance. >>>

MonoTEC is an electronic system to monitor the performance of a Corona discharge on corona electrodes. MonoTEC is an ad-on or an integrated monitoring system for Tantec’s renowned corona systems for surface treatment of plastics. A typical MonoTEC system employs 8-channel transmitter modules powered by the applied high voltage to the treatment electrodes, transmitting discharge data to the integrated 8-channel receiver modules. An essential part of the system is a microprocessor managing all received data from the electrodes with data transfer to a main machine control, i.e. a PLC-unit.
